IMPORTANCE OF INFRA RED EMBER DETECTOR IN COAL CONVEYOR FIRE DETECTION :

Fire at the conveyor belts carrying coal is not unusual. There are many report incidents and a lot more un-reported incidents of coal conveyor fire.

Causes of Fire:

Coal being a combustible material is ready to catch fire when there is sufficient heat. Heat can be produced due to,

Condition of Fire:

Coal -> Due to Friction / Environmental conditions -> Coal ember -> After spreading -> Flaming fire

Conventional Mode of Fire Detection:

Problem with conventional Detection:

Heat Detectors are point type detectors and are not suitable for conveyor moving fire

IS 2189 : 2008 – Selection, Installation and Maintenance of Automatic Fire Detection and Alarm System Clause 5.2 Choice of Fire Detector

Fire detectors are designed to detect one or more of three characteristics of a fire that is smoke, heat or radiation (flame). No one type of detector is the most suitable for all applications and final choice is dependent on the individual circumstances; it is often useful to employ a combination of different types of detectors.

(a) the speed of response required;

(b) the need to minimize false alarms; and

Ember Detector :

Detects moving Ember /Hot body on the coal conveyor
Being IP67 protected, it is suitable for installation in harsh condition
Detects the InfraRed radiation from the moving Ember to give fire alarm
Detects and provide alarm before ember spreads into flame
Can connect to any Conventional / Addressable Fire Alarm panels / PLC through Potential Free Contacts

Design Basis :

Ember detector is placed on top of the conveyor belt monitoring the entire width of the coal conveyor
Typically one Ember detector is placed at the Head Pulley and one Ember detector is placed at Tail Pulley.
Additional detectors are added when the conveyor length is long and when additional zone classification is required for multiple Deluge MVWS system.
